What's Your Dream? đź’

This newsletter is inspired by a recent book & poem I read.

We will be back into the rhythm of our Thursday newsletters very soon, where we share what makers we’ve been to visit, our podcast updates and things we want to share in this space.

Today, though, I wanted to take a moment to reach out. For those of you who’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know Jack and I— a husband and wife team behind We Are Makers. We’re just two passionate people doing our best to make a difference to the maker space in our own way, through our magazine, podcasts, grant fund and other initiatives we are working on in the background.

I thought I’d share a little bit about myself, Kate, inspired by a poem by Jennae Cecelia from her upcoming book Deep in My Feels and a new read I picked up this week, What’s Your Dream? by Simon Squibb.

Our dreams evolve as we move through life—mine certainly have. Running a business, let alone publishing a magazine, was never part of my dream when I was younger. In fact, I never thought I was capable of creating something like this 👇

Today, I Met My Younger Self for Coffee.

I remember her well—that girl who was always trying to fit in. Shy, unsure of herself, constantly comparing herself to others, not realising her own unique qualities. She didn’t speak up much, rarely putting her hand up in class or showing her true personality. But I could see her potential. She had so much to say within her small circle of friends.

Growing up in Scotland was beautiful. But back then, my dream was never to move, travel, or start a business. Home was my comfort blanket.

Entrepreneurship wasn’t even on my radar—school didn’t encourage it, and I had little exposure to it. Thankfully, I had very supportive parents who believed in me, no matter what I chose to do.

Over coffee, I told my younger self: “Your life will take you down many paths—more than you ever imagined.”

My dreams have shifted a lot since school, and even more after my time at university.

Did I want to work for someone else? No, not really. I guess my dream was to work for myself and dictate my own future.

Back then, many people around me pushed against the idea of self-employment—especially in craft and making.

I told her: “You’ll find your feet and your purpose. It won’t be easy, but you’ll get there.”

Thankfully, I’ve found my calling. We Are Makers is that purpose—a mission to help others in this space that I love.

She smiled when I told her about Jack, my now-husband and partner in this venture. We met 13 years ago.

I want to take a moment here to thank Jack for standing by this dream—We Are Makers. Who knew five years ago we’d be this far? Thank you for working so hard outside of WAM so we can continue building this business—a business with purpose, built from scratch, born from our dreams and vision, turning ideas into something real and meaningful 💖

Graduation in 2015 until now - meeting makers across the globe!

Whatever your dream is today, keep fighting for it. Dreams have a way of shifting and evolving as we grow, but each step—no matter how small—takes you closer to where you're meant to be. Some days it will feel easy; other days, it may feel impossible. But trust that every effort, every setback, and every lesson is shaping something greater than you can imagine. Stay curious, stay resilient, and don’t be afraid to adapt along the way.

And as Jack would say, give it one more day.

Why don’t you try this exercise for yourself, what would you say to your younger self if you met them for a coffee?
